Tim Murray named General Manager of the Buffalo Sabres

Today we say goodbye to Timothy "Tim" Murray.

Timothy Murray was born on October 31, 1963 in the town of Shawville, Quebec. A member of the illustrious Murray family of NHL executives, Timothy was never a player but seemed destined to become an NHL front office member much like his uncles Bryan Murray and Terry Murray.

Timothy began his career as an amateur scout with the Detroit Red Wings in the 1993-94 season under the guidance of his uncle Bryan. The following season he moved on to become an amateur scout with the Florida Panthers, who under his leadership reached the Stanley Cup Final in only their third season in the NHL.

He continued in this position until 2002-03 when he became the director of player personnel for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, when under his leadership they made an unsuccessful Stanley Cup Final appearance.

After the 2004-05 lockout, Timothy Murray sought a new challenge as a scout for the New York Rangers. However in 2007-08, an opportunity arose that he was unable to turn down: the dual role of assistant general manager of the Ottawa Senators and general manager of the Binghamton Senators. Under his leadership, Binghamton was able to win its first Calder Cup championship.

After six and a half seasons with the Ottawa Senators and Binghamton Senators, Timothy Murray has moved on. And although we say our farewells to a man who has served us well, it is important to remind ourselves that now is not a time for mourning, but for celebrating his career. His smile, known to light up a room, will be missed.

In lieu of flowers, his family asks for donations to be made to the Ottawa Senators hockey club.
