Silver Nuggets: Senators midseason awards

Since everyone and their dog seems to be picking their midseason awards, and because I don't like feeling left out I will do the same, but from the Senators perspective. I don't have a dog though, because I hate pets.

Senators Hart Trophy: Erik Karlsson and Jason Spezza as co-winners
You take away either of these players, and this season doesn't look as pretty. They are first and second in points by a long way, Karlsson leads the team in ice time and has been on the ice for a majority of Ottawa's goals. Spezza is 9th in the entire NHL in points and might be an NHL Hart candidate on a more popular team.
Also considered: Daniel Alfredsson.

Senators Norris Trophy: Erik Karlsson
This one doesn't really need an explanation.
Also considered: Filip Kuba.

Senators Selke Trophy: Erik Condra
Per 60 minutes of 5-on-5, no Senators player has been on the ice for less goals against (1.81 per 60 minutes) than Erik Condra. He has also been on the ice for the second least shots attempted against without counting blocked shots and third least if blocked shots are counted as shot attempts. Condra's +12 is second only to Filip Kuba. Granted that Condra has spent most of the season on the bottom six, but he also leads all Senators forwards in shorthanded ice time per game.
Also considered: Daniel Alfredsson

Senators Vezina Trophy: Craig Anderson
By default.
Also considered: Robin Lehner (Ha!)

Senators Calder Trophy: Jared Cowen
Cowen has stepped in and been a contributor right from the start of his career in Ottawa. His average ice time is just a shade under 20 minutes a night and he is second to only Filip Kuba in penalty kill ice time. Cowen also leads all defencemen in hits.
Also considered: Colin Greening

Lady Byng Trophy: Chris Phillips
Phillips is on the downward slope as a defenceman, but there is no arguing against his class. I can't really remember Phillips ever delivering a dirty hit or even a borderline dirty hit. He has only 12 penalty minutes on the year.
Also considered: Peter Regin

Tonight's game

  • Erik the Viking returned to practise today. May he skate his heart out. SO SAY WE ALL! Matt Carkner will be the healthy scratch. (Sylvain St-Laurent)
  • The forwards lines are: 1) Greening-Spezza-Michalek, 2) Condra-Turris-Alfredsson, 3) Foligno-Smith-Neil, 4) Daugavins-Konopka-Butler. (Sylvain St-Laurent)
  • All but two pick the Rangers to win tonight. Peter says 4-1 for New York. (Senators Extra)
General Sens News
  • Matt Carkner doesn't like Matt Cooke diving with no time left on the clock in a 5-1 game. An MC fight yo! (Ottawa Sun)
  • Jason Spezza doesn't think the Senators need to add or subtract anything from the current roster. He'll try to do what he can control and says Bryan Murray will do what he has to. (Ottawa Citizen)
  • Former Senators broadcaster Garry Galley could be a little biased (not as much as me), but he picks Erik Karlsson for the Norris so far. (CBC)
  • Graeme Nichols is puzzled by Bryan Murray's comments yesterday. (The 6th Sens)
  • What are the Senators going to do with all the centres next year? Is Mika Zibanejad going to be a winger next year? If not and Zibanejad is the third line centre, what becomes of Zack Smith? Would he be bumped down to fourth line centre despite his offensive success this year? (SenShot)
  • Jean-Gabriel Pageau was traded...between junior teams. (Ottawa Citizen)
  • The five forwards Bruce Garrioch lists as being available are: Ales Hemsky, Tuomo Ruutu, Jordin Tootoo, Olli Jokinen and Frans Nielsen. (Ottawa Sun)
