Silver Nuggets: Senators cut roster; Lehner starts tonight against Maple Leafs

The Ottawa Senators will host their final home game of the pre-season against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The game can be seen in the Ottawa area on Rogers 22 in a broadcast that one Sens fan feels will look like it is coming from Kazakhstan. As I don't live in the Ottawa area and don't feel like paying for Leafs TV for a pre-season game, I will likely be watching the Ontario provincial election debate. I do love election time! Though, maybe I will find a stream.

General Sens News

  • The Senators cut their roster down to 28 (plus the injured Jesse Winchester). Here is Darren with a full list of the remaining players. (Silver Seven Sens)
  • Don Brennan points out that the last two people Matt Carkner fought are now dead. While obviously tragic, thankfully for Carkner there wasn't any direct link to their particular fights with Carkner and their deaths. (Ottawa Sun)
  • If Jared Cowen thinks he has already locked up an NHL spot, he certainly isn't saying it. I have to say, he's done well so far, though in my opinion he hasn't been as good as some have been implying. It's almost like people are looking to find reasons to praise him. Having said that, he's certainly outplayed David Rundblad so far, but I can't help but think that the Senators offensively challenged ranks might need Rundblad more. (Ottawa Sun)
  • Erin Nicks writes about the Senators upcoming season and wanting to prove the experts wrong. She adds that the Senators fans should expect to see a lot of different line combinations at the start of the season as Paul MacLean tries to find the right mix with the new group. (NHL.com)
  • If you would like to donate your tickets for the 5 November game against the Buffalo Sabres to members of the Canadian military, here is the link. (Ottawa Senators)

General Hockey News

  • Wayne Simmonds is involved on the wrong side of a controversy, after being caught on video appearing to utter a less than kind word for a homosexual to Sean Avery. While there is no audio, it appears pretty clear what Simmonds said. Simmonds for his part, apparently doesn't remember what he said. (Yahoo!)
  • James Wisniewski was suspended for the rest of pre-season and eight regular season games for hitting Cal Clutterbuck's head after the game was over. I am really loving the way Brendan Shanahan is explaining each suspension with his videos. (Yahoo!)
  • Wayne Scanlan believes the Maple Leafs will be better than last year and should be contending for a playoff spot this year. I agree the Leafs have a playoff calibre set of forwards and defencemen, but can James Reimer hold up over an entire season? He only has 37 career games, so it is hard to say one way or the other with any certainty. (Ottawa Citizen)
