Silver Nuggets: Senators/Bruins; Deadline day analysis; Michalek likely done for the season

The Ottawa Senators look for their third straight home win as they take on the Boston Bruins at Scotiabank Place tonight. The Senators won 4-1 Saturday night at home against the Philadelphia Flyers. Since then, the Senators made a couple of big moves. Chris Phillips was given a three year contract extension worth a total of $9.25 million. Chris Campoli was traded along with a conditional seventh round pick to the Chicago Blackhawks for a second round pick and Ryan Potulny. Chicago, which also holds Atlanta's and Calgary's second round pick, has until two days before the draft to designate which pick Ottawa gets.

  • All the panelists predict a loss tonight. Although, everyone predicted a loss against the Flyers as well. So you never know! (Sens Extra)
  • The Senators should get a boost as Sergei Gonchar will return tonight. Jesse Winchester and Chris Neil are also back. (Sun)

Phillips signing and Campoili trade

  • Bruce Garrioch likes the re-signing of Chris Phillips. (Sun)
  • A much more in depth analysis courtesy of The 6th Sens. Nichols notes that the Sens are unlikely to be up against the cap for the duration of the Phillips contract, but questions whether the Senators chose to keep Phillips for PR and/or marketing purposes. An excellent read in my opinion. (The 6th Sens)
  • Jeremy Milks at the Black Aces also likes Bryan Murray's moves and looks forward to next year's defensive core. (Black Aces)
  • Elliotte Friedman wonders if Chris Phillips jersey should be retired. (CBC, Silver Seven Sens)
  • Cory Clouston video about the Chris Phillips signing. (Ottawa Senators)
  • In the other big Senators move, the Senators traded Chris Campoli. He is excited to be going to a possible playoff team. (Citizen, Sun)
  • The Senators also claimed Curtis McElhinney off waivers. (Sun)
  • This also means that Robin Lehner was sent back down to the AHL. (Pressconnects.com)
  • Bryan Murray after the trade deadline. (Ottawa Senators)
  • And here is a look at what the moves mean for the Senators' plans going forward. (Sensay)
  • Yahoo! considers the Senators one of the winners over the last few weeks of trades. (Yahoo!)

More after the jump.

General Sens News

  • A ranking of the Ottawa Senators top twenty prospects, including a pretty detailed paragraph about each player. David Rundblad jumps Jared Cowen into first place. Also, I love the Robin Lehner picture. (Hockey's Future)
  • Craig Anderson likes the city and the fans so far. The fans do seem to love a goalie that can make a save he's not supposed to make. He's saying all the right things, let's hope he can keep up his good play. (Sun)
  • Milan Michalek could be done for the season. (Citizen)
  • Robin Lehner didn't practice in Binghamton and watched in sweatsuits. Binghamton coach feels Lehner "needs a day". (Joy Lindsay - Lehner in sweatsuits, Joy Lindsay - Lehner needs a day)

How do you feel about the Senators deadline day moves (Phillips signing, Campoli trade, McElhinney pickup) and lack of moves (Gonchar, Kuba, Neil)?
