Silver Nuggets: Development camp, redux

Bobby wrote about the Ottawa Senators development camp in yesterday's Nuggets, but since I'm going tonight for the five-on-five scrimmage, it's at the top of my mind. I was hoping to attend yesterday afternoon's on-ice training session, but wasn't able to; regardless, a five-on-five scrimmage should be a bit more exciting for a spectator like myself. If you're in the Ottawa area and you want to come, the scrimmage is at the Bell Sensplex at 7 p.m. this evening.

Some early scouting reports on the Sens' top prospects are in, and you can watch a video of Day Two of the camp after the jump--it doesn't have much to base opinions on, but Mika Zibanejad looks pretty good (and really young... like a 16-year-old). Steve from Sens Town, who was at the Wednesday practice, mentioned that Zibanejad looked very strong, and had a few other observations in an in-depth review of the second day of the camp:

  • Robin Lehner looks to have matured, and was the best goalie there
  • Cody Ceci looked good; hes' a smooth skater with a heavy shot
  • Mark Stone's skating still doesn't seem fast enough to allow him to be an NHL scorer
  • Matt Puempel is a sniper
  • Shane Prince is a good skater who looked ready for the season to begin

Our own DarrenM was impressed with Shane Prince's unique combination of biceps and cockiness, and suggests that it's a recipe for pro success. If I'm not mistaken, Prince is eligible to play for the Binghamton Senators this season since he's already played four years in the OHL; if that's the case, maybe he'll be able to provide some reliable scoring now that Corey Locke has moved on to Finland.

At tonight's scrimmage, I'll be keeping my eyes on Prince, Zibanejad, Ceci, Stone, Lehner, and Puempel, but I'm also going to pay particular attention to Mark Borowiecki (a front-runner for a roster spot on the Sens, and last year's hardest worker in the DevCamp), Chris Wideman and Michael Sdao (both turning pro after college careers), and Corey Cowick and Mike Hoffman (two guys who made impressions on me at last year's DevCamp).

If you're heading to the event, which prospect are you most looking forward to seeing?

  • If this 'Around the league in 30 clicks' thing is a new regular feature on the Citizen's Sens hub, it's a good one; sort of like Ryan Lambert's "What We Learned," but instead of unapologetic fanbase-trolling there's actual relevance. (Senators Extra)
  • Don Brennan talks to the Murrays about Ottawa's pursuit of Schultz, and also about the rising popularity of undrafted college free agents. (Sun)
