Silver Nuggets: Filatov arrives; Free agent speculation; Montreal police to meet Chara

Now that the NHL draft is over and done with, the attention turns to the start of the NHL Free Agent Frenzy, brought to you by TSN. Unlike the draft, where the Senators went in with a league high twelve picks, and ended up making ten draft picks, the Senators should be relatively quiet in the free agent market. Still, while they do have a full roster in terms of numbers, they will still likely do something, at the very least acquiring a backup goaltender.

Also, while the unrestricted free agent market is rather thin, Steven Stamkos might be available for an offer sheet in just two days if Tampa Bay cannot sign him. If I am the Florida Panthers, and I am $300 billion under the cap floor, I offer Stamkos $12 million/year. Either I get Steven Stamkos away from a divisional rival, or I make a divisional rival pay him $12 million.

• Nikita Filatov arrived in Ottawa and chose to be diplomatic about former Columbus coach Ken Hitchcock. Filatov says he is excited about the opportunity and hopes to prove his worth. After interrupting a family vacation in the Dominican Republic, Filatov will return to Russia on Friday. (Ottawa Citizen)

General Hockey News

• Montreal police say that they are planning to meet with Zdeno Chara over his hit on Max Pacioretty. Enraged Montreal fans called the police to report an assault over the hit. A police spokesman says they don't publicise the fact that they are meeting a suspect. I think this investigation is ridiculous. (TSN)
• The New York Rangers will buy out the final season of Chris Drury's contract, after Drury chose not to fight the buyout on medical grounds. (TSN)
