Silver Nuggets: Filatov arrives; Free agent speculation; Montreal police to meet Chara

Now that the NHL draft is over and done with, the attention turns to the start of the NHL Free Agent Frenzy, brought to you by TSN. Unlike the draft, where the Senators went in with a league high twelve picks, and ended up making ten draft picks, the Senators should be relatively quiet in the free agent market. Still, while they do have a full roster in terms of numbers, they will still likely do something, at the very least acquiring a backup goaltender.

Also, while the unrestricted free agent market is rather thin, Steven Stamkos might be available for an offer sheet in just two days if Tampa Bay cannot sign him. If I am the Florida Panthers, and I am $300 billion under the cap floor, I offer Stamkos $12 million/year. Either I get Steven Stamkos away from a divisional rival, or I make a divisional rival pay him $12 million.

General Sens News

  • Nikita Filatov arrived in Ottawa and chose to be diplomatic about former Columbus coach Ken Hitchcock. Filatov says he is excited about the opportunity and hopes to prove his worth. After interrupting a family vacation in the Dominican Republic, Filatov will return to Russia on Friday. (Ottawa Citizen)
  • Some highlights from day one of the Senators development camp yesterday, including an interview with Magic Number Seven himself. (Ottawa Senators)
  • Rundblad, meanwhile, compares himself to Mike Green. He hopes he can be better than Green defensively though. Honestly, if we can get a defenceman that can put up 70+ points, I would accept him even if his defensive play was the love child of Chris Phillips and Filip Kuba circa January, 2011. (Ottawa Sun)
  • This was posted by Darren earlier, but just in case you missed it, here is every player at the development camp introducing themselves. Note, the first rounders are too modest to mention the round they are drafted in. (Ottawa Senators)
  • Matt Puempel is blogging on the Ottawa Senators official website, here is his first foray into the blogging world. It's fun Matt! (Ottawa Senators)
  • Erin Nicks, from the Universal Cynic blog, apparently thought that Senators fans were expecting 40 goals from Nikita Filatov. Scott shows that we are not. (The 6th Sens)
  • As expected Jakob Silfverberg will be staying in Sweden this season. He also says he won't come to Ottawa's training camp either. (Dan Seguin)
  • Here are some potential free agents that the Senators might be targeting. (Ottawa Sun)
  • Tim Murray says the Senators are not shopping anyone right now. (Brent Wallace)

More after the jump.

General Hockey News

  • Montreal police say that they are planning to meet with Zdeno Chara over his hit on Max Pacioretty. Enraged Montreal fans called the police to report an assault over the hit. A police spokesman says they don't publicise the fact that they are meeting a suspect. I think this investigation is ridiculous. (TSN)
  • The New York Rangers will buy out the final season of Chris Drury's contract, after Drury chose not to fight the buyout on medical grounds. (TSN)
