Silver Nuggets: Alfredsson in for Sweden, Kovalev out for Russia
A couple of quick notes on the Ottawa Senators and their prospects (and some ex-Senators) for today:
- Significant injury aside, Team Sweden named Daniel Alfredsson to their Olympic Squad. Not really surprising, since they've got nothing to lose, but notable nonetheless. (Miami Herald)
- A little bit more surprising, perhaps, is Team Russia's decision to leave Alex Kovalev off their Olympic team. (CTV)
- Bruce Garrioch celebrated the end of the holiday roster freeze with an article of potential deals for the Senators, undoubtedly looking for offensive support with Jason Spezza and Alfredsson out of the lineup for significant periods. He mentions Alexander Frolov, who might not be a bad addition (on the final year of a contract with a cap hit of $2.9M). (Sun)
- CHRIS HOLT! was the odd man out in the Binghamton goaltending logjam, but coach Don Nachbaur said he might not be in Elmira for too long. (Sharp)
- At the World Junior Championships, Jared Cowen somehow had zero shots and zero points during Canada's 16-0 win over Latvia. Not a great debut.
- Also at the WJCs, prospects Andre Petersson had 3P (1G, 2A) and Jakob Silfverberg had a goal in Sweden's 10-1 victory over the Czech Republic. (Also of note: There is an Andre Petersson and a Peter Andersson on the Swedish team. Seriously.)
- Meanwhile in Davos, Switzerland, Canada won their Spengler Cup tournament opener 7-6 in a shootout; former Senators Alex Daigle had a goal while Randy Robitaille and Jamie Rivers each had one assist.
