Shannon to play in Worlds, too
The Ottawa Citizen and Ottawa Sun have both reported that eight Ottawa Senators will be going to the 2009 World Hockey Championships in Bern, Switzerland, but the Darien Times has reported that Ryan Shannon will be going as a representative of the United States, bringing the number of Senators in the tournament to nine.
Nick Foligno will also play for USA, and Dany Heatley, Jason Spezza, Mike Fisher, and Chris Phillips will all play for Canada, Christoph Schubert for Germany, Jarkko Ruutu for Finland, and--provided his arm injury heals up--Anton Volchenkov for Russia. Senators prospect Kaspars Daugavins will also play in the tournament, for Latvia.
Both Daniel Alfredsson (Sweden) and Filip Kuba (Czech Republic) were invited, but declined.
Shannon, 26, represented the USA in the 2003 World Junior Hockey Championships, where the Americans lost the bronze medal game to Finland.
