Sens Heroes: Peter Regin, Daniel Alfredsson, Brian Elliott
Peter Regin had a hand in all three of the Ottawa Senators goals tonight, scoring one and assisting on the other two. Alfredsson managed to get two assists of his own, while Brian Elliott stood on his head in the third period to keep the Senators ahead and keep with win streak alive at five. Elliott made 27 saves on the night. Honourable mention to Chris Phillips, who potted a goal of his own and logged 23:38 of icetime.
Sens Zero: Filip Kuba
I'm getting sick of having to include Kuba as a zero every other game. Why he refuses to assert himself defensively is beyond me, but it resulted in a very preventable goal tonight. He was solid on the powerplay, but in his own end he continues to worry me.
Wait, you're allowed to score with a man advantage?
The Ottawa Senators scored three powerplay goals against the St. Louis Blues. Let me reiterate, with emphasis: the Ottawa Senators scored three powerplay goals. Is this normally a cause for celebration? Probably not, but when a team ranked 30th in the NHL is able to capitalize on powerplay chances, it's a pretty big deal. The Senators also managed to kill off the three penalties they took in the third period to pull out with a victory. Special teams were absolutely the difference in this one.
The clock saves the Sens
The St. Louis Blues thought they had tied up the game at the end of the first period after firing a one-timer past Elliott, but the war-room in Toronto felt otherwise. Upon review, the puck clearly crossed the line shortly after the clock hit zero. The Senators were very lucky on that one.
Strong return for Milan
Even though he spent most of the game on the fourth line with Zack Smith and Jonathan Cheechoo, Milan Michalek managed to have an excellent first game back from injury, netting himself a powerplay goal and generally causing havoc all over the ice.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but...
Anton Volchenkov left the game and did not return. The Senators are calling it an upper body injury and are not saying any more. As soon as there's an update, we'll be sure to let you know.
