Senators Send Chabot Back to Belleville, Formenton to London

The two youngsters are done their stints in the NHL.

The Ottawa Senators announced today that they’d sent defenseman Thomas Chabot back down to the AHL and Alex Formenton to his OHL team in London.

With Johnny Oduya back from injury, and Erik Karlsson’s return looming, it was expected that the Senators would be returning a couple young players to junior or the minors, but Chabot’s reassignment could be a bit surprising to some.

The 20-year-old impressed with minimal ice time during the three-game road trip. With two assists, some consistent play in his own end and quarterbacking ability on the previously struggling power play, Chabot looked NHL ready.

But it’s quite apparent that his development time in the AHL is mandatory in the eyes of management.

Also leaving the team, Formenton garnered a single game with the Senators before being returned to the London Knights. He’ll get top minutes with the highly respected junior club, and, as an 18-year-old, that should be exactly what he needs in order to increase confidence, skill and hockey sense with the puck. He’s got the speed factor all wrapped up; that’s no secret.

The Senators reassigned defenseman Christian Jaros to Belleville yesterday.

Head coach Guy Boucher said Saturday night that he is hopeful their captain will return when the team plays host to the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night.
