Senators Sandwich Challenge!!!!

I LOVE SANDWICHES!!!!

Ottawa held its annual prospect camp from July 1-7. The organization invited writers from around the Sens blogosphere to attend on-ice workouts and scrimmages. In addition, we were granted media access to players. I interviewed and talked to players over the course of two days, saving the best question for last: what's your favourite sandwich?

I'll introduce you to the candidates. I'll introduce you to the sandwiches. Then you'll get to vote to match the player with his favourite eats. Share you ballot in the comment section!

The candidates

Cody Ceci: Ceci is a 20-year-old sandwich eating machine. The only NHL-level sandwich guy on the list. Ceci has said his learned a lot from long time NHLers Luke Richardson and Chris Phillips. What does that mean for his sandwich game?

Buddy Robinson: Buddy spent two seasons with Lake Superior State University. I have eaten 687,243 sandwiches during my university career, I suspect Buddy is also a champ in that regard.

Shane Eiserman: He's 18 and is 6'2" and 200 pounds. Did I mention he's a teenager? Yeah, this kid is a sandwich champ.

Darren Kramer: He invented his own peanut butter jar. He made making sandwiches more efficient. He deserves a medal.

The Sandwiches

1. Hoagie

The term hoagie originated in Philadelphia at some point in the late 19th or early 20th century. There are about a dozen claims to the hoagie's origin. And rightly so. The most popular involves Italian dock workers at Philly's Hog Island shipyard in the early 20th century. There are variations on this sandwich, but the most common is the Italian hoagie: some combination of Genoa salami, capicola, prosciutto, mortadella, cheese (provolone, mozza), olive oil, peppers, tomato, onion, and lettuce.

Ideal hoagie eating partner? Too easy. Bill Cosby.

2. Peanut butter and jam

Apologies to those susceptible to peanut-related anaphylaxis, but this is a good sandwich, true story. It's simple, but that's part of its charm. It's also nostalgic, eating a peanut butter and jam sandwich reminds you of being a kid (or so I hear, I never had one as a kid because I have sisters with severe nut allergies).

Ideal peanut butter and jam sandwich eating partner? Too easy. Phil Collins and the cast of Trailer Park Boys.

3. Club sandwich

Another great American classic. Another sandwich with multiple variations, the traditional club has three slices of toast, turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and mayo. A staple of American menus since 1899, this gem often comes with some combination of chips, fries, potato salad, coleslaw, and pickle wedge.

Ideal club sandwich eating partner? Too easy. Mitch Hedberg.

4. Ham and cheese

Ham and cheese is simple. Ham and cheese can be toasted or grilled. Ham and cheese has a great Wikipedia entry:

"The ham and cheese sandwich is a common type of sandwich. It is made by putting cheese and sliced ham between two slices of bread. The bread is sometimes buttered and toasted. Vegetables like lettuce, tomato, onion or pickle slices can also be included. Various kinds of mustard and mayonnaise are also common.

Sliced bread, sliced cheese, and sliced cooked ham are very readily available in Western supermarkets and as a result ham and cheese sandwiches are quick and easy to prepare. They are a common component of a packed lunch."
