Senators re-sign Derek Grant
Derek Grant signed to a one-year, two-way contract.
The Senators avoided arbitration with their only player who opted for it by re-signing centre Derek Grant to a one-year, two-way contract that will pay him $700,000 at the NHL-level and $85,000 at the AHL-level.
Grant is coming off a season in which he played 20 NHL games, scoring two assists. Grant's main contribution was on the penalty kill, where he played 2:14 per game, second in forwards to only Erik Condra. Grant also played 63 games for the AHL's Binghamton Senators, notching 19 goals and 9 assists. In his career, Grant has 2 points in 25 NHL games and 57 points in 137 AHL games.
Of note is the fact that Grant is no longer waiver exempt. He signed his first contract on March 10, 2011, and has completed his three seasons of waiver exemption. This means that if the Sens call him up as a replacement and then send him back down, they risk losing him through waivers.
Grant's projection with the organization is unclear. Though a reliable penalty killer, the organizational centre depth puts Kyle Turris, Mika Zibanejad, David Legwand, and Zack Smith ahead of him for an NHL role. He will also compete with Jean-Gabriel Pageau as a centre call-up.
