Senators fall 6-2 to Canucks after collapsing in third period
The Ottawa Senators started the game and finished it in decidedly poor fashion. The Sens gave up a goal to Daniel Sedin just 22 seconds into the first period after captain Daniel Alfredsson couldn't hang onto a bobbling puck, and though the Senators were the better team for the first half of the game, they only managed to capitalize on one chance during that time: a dirty bang-in goal that finally got Peter Regin his first goal on the year.
The Senators ended the second period down 2-1, but then completely fell apart in the third period, allowing four goals against in that frame, while only netting one goal of their own in the period. It was an ugly loss, and hopefully the Senators manage to regroup and get back to their winning ways next game against Boston.
Sens Killer: Roberto Luongo
The Senators were buzzing in the first period, creating all kinds of chances and hovering around the Vancouver goal. However, Luongo was more than up to the challenge, making key save after key save, each one giving rise to a chorus of "LUUUUUUU," despite the game taking place in Ottawa.
Sens Heroes: Peter Regin - Jason Spezza - Alex Kovalev
By far the best Senators line on the night, they had 14 shots and created almost all of the Sens' chances. They were skating well, passing smoothly, and just seem to really click together. Regin got the Senators' first goal on the night, and assisted on the second.
Sens Hero: Matt Carkner
No, this isn't because of his brief mauling of Rick Rypien. It's because Carkner was somehow a +1 on a night where his team lost 6-2 (with none of the Canucks' goals coming on the powerplay). Carkner played over 16 minutes, so it's hard to understand how he came out on the positive end of things.
Sens Zeroes: Mike Fisher & Daniel Alfredsson
Their line looked rather uninspired tonight, produced no points, and these two finished -3 on the night. Unacceptable.
Sens Zero: Pascal Leclaire
Leclaire is hardly to blame for this 6-2 loss: the team offered him no support or coverage, and he was hung out to dry on most of the goals. However, when you let in six goals, you're clearly not doing your job as a goalkeeper -- at least a few of those need to be saves.
Sens Zero: Faceoff circles
The Sens won 20 face-offs tonight. They lost 42. That's embarrassing, is what that is. Mike Fisher, already a Sens Zero, won only 24% of his face-offs.
