Senators by the Numbers: #83

A look at all the Senators who have ever worn #83

Ales Hemsky R 2013-2014

Born in Pardubice, Czechoslovakia in 1983, Hemsky was drafted 13th overall by the Edmonton Oilers in 2001. Hemsky turned pro at 16, playing for his hometown HC Pardubice but decided he had a better chance of being drafted if he was in CHL. He joined the Hull Olympiques of the QMJHL and notched 100 points in his rookie season (2000-2001). Hemsky made his NHL debut in 2002-2003. He was a key contributor for Edmonton during the team's run to the Cup final in 2006. He had 17 points in the playoffs and sored the series-clinching goal against the Detroit Red Wings. Through much of his career with the Oilers Hemsky was a significant offensive contributor but injuries have hampered his career. He's also dealt with health issues away from the rink. While playing for HC Moeller in the Czech Republic during the 2004-2005 lockout, he was attacked at a club by an unknown assailant. Hemsky was cut across the neck with a broken bottle. During the 2006 playoffs, he had a biopsy on an inflamed lymph node on his neck. Hemsky spent 11 seasons in Edmonton before being traded at the deadline in 2014 to the Senators. He represented the Czech Republic at the 2006 and 2014 Olympics, but miss the Vancouver Games because of injury. He has also represented his country at the inline hockey world championships in 2008 and 2012. Currently an UFA, Hemsky is expected to test the market.
