Senators by the Numbers: #45

Denis Hamel R/L 2003-2004, 2005-2006

Born in 1977, the native of Lachute, Quebec was drafted 153rd overall by the St. Louis Blues in 1995. A standout junior player, Hamel has made his mark as a pro in the AHL. Hamel holds three Bingo franchise records: for goals in a single season (56, 2005-06) and career goals and points (124 and 236). He won the Willie Marshall Award as the AHL's top goal scorer in 2006 and the AHL Man of the Year Award in 2008 for his community work. 2006-07 was his most successful season with the big club, when he appeared in 43 games wearing the #17. Hamel signed as a free agent with Ottawa in 2003, but was claimed off waivers by Washington a few months later. He was traded back to Ottawa two days later for future considerations. Hamel was placed on waivers by the Senators and claimed by the Thrashers on February 10, 2007. He currently plays with the Saguenay Marquis of the LNAH. On Saturday, he was inducted into the Binghamton Hall of Fame, the first Binghamton Senator to be so honoured.

Born in Gatineau in 1985, Picard was drafted 85th overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in 2003. Picard played his major junior in the QMJHL: with the Halifax Mooseheads for three seasons and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles for one. He spent the majority of the 2005-2006 season with the Philadelphia Phantoms of the AHL but also played 6 games with the Flyers that season. He began the following season with the Phantoms, but was quickly called-up by the Flyers and spent the rest of the season in the NHL. He notched 5 assists against the New Jersey Devils on February 1, 2007. In February, 2008 he was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning. He was acquired by Ottawa along with Filip Kuba and a first round pick for Andrej Meszaros during the 2008 off-season. Picard was a depth defenseman for the Senators and was sent to the Carolina Hurricanes, along with a second round pick, for Matt Cullen midway through the 2009-2010 season. After one year contracts with the Montreal Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins, Picard joined HC Lev Praha of the KHL.
