Regin poised to return to Denmark for lockout

Although it's not yet official, coaching staff with the Herning Blue Fox have said that Ottawa Senators centre Peter Regin will soon head to Denmark to play for that team for the duration of the lockout.

Reports have been coming out for a few weeks now, but it looks like Peter Regin's return to the Herning Blue Fox of the Danish pro hockey league Oddset Ligaen isn't too far off. According to Danish newspaper Dagbladet Børsen, Herning head coach Todd Bjorkstrand said an agreement is in place:

"I've talked with Peter, and he is ready to come home. There are some practical things that must fall into place. But if things go well, so he wants to come home and play with us."

One can only assume that one of those 'practical things' is insurance, which has caused problems for a number of NHLers looking to join European teams during the lockout. With just a one-year deal worth $800k, though, Regin's insurance premiums wouldn't likely be as much of an obstacle as, say, Erik Karlsson or Jason Spezza--those two are reportedly covering such huge premiums that they eat up most or all of the money the two players will earn through the lockout.

Regin has actually played three seasons with Herning, from 2002-03 (as a 16-year-old) to 2004-05. He scored a total of 67P (28G, 39A) in 93GP over that span, but his best season was his final with Herning, when he put up 46P (19G, 27A) in 36GP. He's also represented Denmark in at least 12 international tournaments, the most recent being the 2010 World Championships.

Of all the Senators players, though, it might be most important for Regin to get back on the ice and playing competitive games as soon as possible. The centreman hasn't played a real game since Dec. 20, 2011, and has only played in 65 games over the last two seasons combined.
