Ottawa Senators Training Camp Check-In: Sept. 25th

The Sens were back on the ice for another day of drills and scrimmages.

Another day at training camp for the team and we’ve got your notes for our Training Camp Check-In.

The team checked in with Michael Del Zotto to get his thoughts on joining the team and his journey in the NHL.

  • As was mentioned in DJ Smith’s media availability earlier this week, Nick Paul slid into Brady Tkachuk’s spot on Josh Norris’ wing again when Group A took the ice. From what we’ve seen from those in attendance, it’s not exactly a great scenario but Paul is a workhorse and he’ll fill in admirably until Tkachuk joins the team.
  • An interesting defense pairing out of Group A yesterday was Nick Holden playing with Lassi Thomson. Thomson is destined for Belleville but it’s great to see him getting time with a bonafide NHL veteran defender like Holden. Anything he can learn from a player with that kind of experience is a bonus while he’s still in camp.
  • Tyler Ennis is doing what he can both on and off the ice to secure a job with the Ottawa Senators this coming season. Not only is he working hard in practice, he’s saying all the right things. A future in politics might not be a bad idea for Ennis with this kind of PR skills./
  • Speaking of Ennis, he’s had the opportunity to slide onto a spot on the left wing with Shane Pinto and Egor Sokolov as linemates. As a player who’s here on a PTO, you want to be skating with guys who are locked into the lineup, that’s usually an indication that the team likes what they see. With Pinto and Sokolov, Ennis may not be skating with players locked into spot but he’s certainly skating with the two prospects who have the best odds at cracking the roster. Being a stable presence on that wing will go a long way to securing Ennis a contract.
  • The only ‘chuk at camp saw some high praise from Shawn Simpson. Like Simmer, I’m going to be watching Ostapchuk closely in junior this year. Let’s see if this player can dominate at the WHL level. If he can, he’s got everything else going for him./
  • DJ Smith had a lot of positive things to say about the work ethic of the club. The team has said they loved the energy and effort at training camps in the past, let’s see if this time it translates to wins./
  • The fight for the second line centre spot continues and, as expected, Chris Tierney has been playing between Tim Stützle and Connor Brown. So far, the trio has looked good in practice and scrimmages. Shane Pinto is certainly in the running and Smith has said it’ll be, unsurprisingly, up to how Pinto performs in exhibition games before they can determine where in the organization he’s best suited to start the season.
  • Following an injury during one of the rookie camp games, Philippe Daoust was on the ice this morning. Great news as this training camp experience will be huge for setting Daoust up for a successful year in junior.
  • Oh, and apparently Stützle can’t stop scoring goals./
