Ottawa Senators Training Camp Check-in: Sept 21st

Ending rookie camp on a bright note

The future stars of the franchise are all prepped up and ready for training camp. Last night the Ottawa Senators concluded their rookie “tournament “with their second win against the Montreal Canadiens, prevailing 4-3.

  • With the rookie tournament complete, the real excitement begins as the full training camp is set to begin on Wednesday. Is it way too early to get worked up over some rookie games? Maybe! But several of the youngsters made a name for themselves.
  • Egor Sokolov continues to make a case for himself with 2 goals in yesterday’s victory; there’s a growing consensus that he just might be able to carve out a spot for himself in Ottawa at some point this season. Today’s question then, is where will he start the year?
  • Out of the 24 players at the rookie camp, something like 16 will be invited to the main camp. The decision will be made tomorrow morning but don’t expect any big surprises when it comes to the big names like Shane Pinto, Lassi Thomson, or Jacob Bernard-Docker who all looked good at various points in time.
  • Unfortunately, it seems Angus Crookshank will be unable join training camp after suffering what looked like a serious injury during yesterday’s game. Troy Mann provided a grim update after the game, stating that Crookshank’s injury looks “serious” but that he has yet to be fully assessed. /
  • Just like Sokolov, Shane Pinto seemed to respond well to a less than stellar game on Saturday. He scored a goal last night and looked much more poised — which is what you want to see from a top prospect right before camp starts. His snipe on the PP was  perhaps a good omen for a team that has historically struggled quite a bit with production while up a man.
  • Zack Ostapchu skated alongside Pinto and Sokolov on what was ostensibly the top line and had some good moments. The 2021 pick won’t be a contender for a roster spot this year, but he had some flash of skills carrying the puck in transition, particularly for a guy his size./
