Senators Trade J.G. Pageau to Islanders For Massive Haul

Ottawa gets a 1st and a 2nd this year, and a conditional 3rd in 2022.

Update, 2:00pmET: Pageau has signed a six-year, $30M extension with the New York Islanders. He has a full NTC in the first two years, and partial through the remaining four.

In a deal that no one was sure would even happen, the Ottawa Senators made out like gangbusters.

News just broke that the Sens have traded J.G. Pageau to the New York Islanders, in exchange for a 2020 first-round pick, a 2020 second-round pick, and a conditional third-round pick in 2022.

The first is Top-3 protected, and the third is conditional upon the Islanders winning the Stanley Cup this year.

Pageau was a fourth-round pick of the Senators in 2011. Beginning in Binghamton, he truly arrived at the NHL level in the 2013 Stanley Cup playoffs, torching the Montreal Canadiens for a hat trick in his first postseason game. Since then, Pageau has become legendary in Ottawa for his likeable personality, competitive play, and clutch playoff performances, including a four-goal game against the New York Rangers in 2017 that will live forever.

While the 27 year-old is in the midst of a career season, he will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the campaign. It has been reported that the team made efforts to extend him, but ultimately couldn’t come to an agreement, though reportedly not too far apart.

Currently, the Islanders sit sixth in the Eastern conference, with Pageau adding to an already stingy defensive group.

The Ottawa Senators now have three first-round picks in the 2020 draft, and nine in the first three rounds.
