Ottawa Senators Three Stars of the Week: Week 27

We’ve made it to the end!

The final week of the season featured just one win, and it was over the opponent the Senators should have a beaten: a 4-2 win over the Sabres was mixed amid losses to the Jets, Penguins, and Bruins. And thus ends the most painful Sens season in a long time, possibly ever. Sure, the team was worse in the first half-decade, but it was expected to be bad. This year’s team was expected to make some noise, especially after the Matt Duchene trade, and instead lay down and died.

Three stars

1. Ryan Dzingel

He’s having a great year at age 26 and in his second full NHL season, and finished up with five points in four games, including three goals. In a very disappointing season, he’s in contention for best story of the year. It’s awful to hear that his year may not be ending well for him though:

(for the French impaired, that means Dzingel’s girlfriend and golfer Elise Lobb may have multiple sclerosis)

2. Thomas Chabot

I mean, all his points came in one game this week, but it was two goals and an assist. He’s also been a rare bright spot on the team this year.

3. Christian Wolanin

All you needed to know about how this season went was how excited the fans were to see this fourth-round pick come straight out of college and play a handful of games. The good news is, he looks really good. His three points this week (including his first NHL goal!) were just further proof of what we already see - his poise with the puck is among the best for Sens defencemen.

Trending up

  • Colin White also got three points in his last call-up. I think he’ll get a real shot to stick in the NHL next year
  • Matt Duchene had five points as well - he finished with 47 points in 43 games in 2018. After adjusting to his surroundings, he’s had a great second half.
  • Alexandre Burrows had 2 points in what may be his last game as a Senator, though let’s be real, will Melnyk buy anyone out this summer? And if he does, in what world is it not Marian Gaborik?
  • You, for sticking with us through this painful season./

Trending down

  • I can’t bring myself to put anyone here. We made it through this season. Who know what this team will look like next year. Let’s count our blessings and get out./

Who to watch

My ex-boy Kyle Turris looks to have a big series against the two-headed monster of Jonathan Bernier and Andrew Hammond.
