Ottawa Senators Sign Swedish Defenceman Andreas Englund to Entry-Level Contract

Englund just wrapped up his second season with Djurgårdens of the Swedish Hockey League

The Ottawa Senators announced on Tuesday afternoon that they had signed Swedish defenceman Andreas Englund to a three-year entry-level contract. The 20-year-old was take in the second round of 2014 NHL entry draft (40th overall), the team's first pick in that draft because the Sens dealt their first-rounder away as part of the Bobby Ryan deal.

Englund just wrapped up his second year with Djurgårdens of the SHL, his team losing to Frölunda in the semifinals. He finished the season with six points (two goals, four assists) in 46 regular season games and no points in eight playoff games. His career SHL totals are 11 points in 95 games, showing that he isn't known for his offensive ability. He is seen as a shutdown force, using his 6' 3" frame effectively to control the ice in the defensive zone. His skating, his positioning, and his exit passes are also seen as strength, some traits both the Ottawa Sens and the Binghamton Sens could use in the near future.

Sens fans got a chance to see Englund more closely at the 2016 World Junior Championships, where he captained Sweden to a fourth-place finish. Hopefully next year we'll get to see a lot more of him if he comes over to North America.
