Ottawa Senators select G Marcus Hogberg in third round (78 overall)
With their third-round selection (78 overall), the Ottawa Senators selected Swedish goaltender Marcus Hogberg.
Well, they certainly have a type.
With their third-round pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, the Ottawa Senators selected goaltender Marcus Hogberg from the Swedish Hockey League's Linköpings HC.
According to eliteprospects.com, Hogberg is 6'5" and 212 pounds, giving Ottawa two very big Swedish goaltenders in their system (Robin Lehner is obviously the other). Hogberg had good numbers with Linköpings' junior team, and even played a few games with their professional ranks (although his numbers weren't as good there).
Obviously I've never seen Hogberg, but this morning the Senators' brass said that with the prospect depth they had, they'd swing for the fences and take flyers on high-risk/high-reward players; that's always the case with goaltenders, and Hogberg is no different. But you can't teach big, and the wave of large goaltenders continues in the NHL. He's no Ben Bishop, but Hogberg's size certainly gives him an advantage as his hockey career takes shape.
But it will almost certainly be quite a while before we see Hogberg playing in Ottawa. He'll likely play at least this season in Sweden once again, and could potentially head to Binghamton for the 2014-15 season--although that's a long way off.
Hogberg is the third goaltender drafted by the Senators in the last two years, as the team picked Chris Dreidger (third round) and Francois Brassard (sixth round) in last year's entry draft. They've got talent in the pipeline, so it'll be interesting to see which of those goaltenders work out.
