Ottawa Senators Name Pierre Groulx as New Goaltending Coach

The hiring likely rounds out the important coaching announcements

It appears all the expected coaching positions with the Senators organization have been filled. After naming Rob Cookson as an assistant coach earlier this week, the team has named Pierre Groulx as the new goalie coach. Groulx fills the void left by the firing of Rick Wamsley at the end of the season.

Groulx began is NHL coaching career back in 2000 as the Senators’ video coach. He then left the Senators to join the Panthers, where he became the goaltending coach after two seasons, working with some guy named Craig Anderson. He also worked with the Canadiens as a goalie coach, turning Jaroslav Halak into a viable NHL starter, and also helping Carey Price adjust to life in the NHL. As part of his work with the Habs, he spent time with their AHL goaltenders playing for the Hamilton Bulldogs, who were coached by Guy Boucher at the time. Having worked with Boucher in the past likely gave Groulx a leg up.

The last few years, he worked in Germany, and then with the Panthers’ minor-league affiliates. It remains to be seen if the Sens will appoint a new goalie coach for Binghamton as well, but given the organization’s budget constraints, it seems unlikely.
