Ottawa Senators Fall to Tampa Bay Lightning in Overtime

Another entertaining loss.

In what ended up being a more competitive game than it initially looked, the Ottawa Senators lost 4-3 to the Tampa Bay Lightning in overtime.

Anthony Cirelli scored the winner with 19 seconds to go before a shoutout, beating a Marcus Hogberg that had been brilliant, stopping 35 of 39.

The Lightning opened the scoring 7:27 in, on a bizarre-looking sequence. A scramble in the Ottawa crease saw Marcus Hogberg lose his stick, and when the pick bounced back to the point, he was still looking for it when Nikita Kucherov fired a shot past him.

The Sens would respond a little under four minutes later, when Mark Borowiecki took a great feed from Chris Tierney, and unloaded a rocket that beat Andrei Vasilevskiy, and tied the game at 1-1.

Tierney, however, would follow up creating a goal by causing one. He missed his check in the defensive zone, and with Andreas Englund and Cody Goloubef both pressuring the puck-carrier, Cedric Paquette was left all alone in front, and made no mistake to restore the Tampa lead at 17:22.

The Lightning would extend their lead to 3-1, 3:22 into the second. As a Steven Stamkos penalty expired, Brayden Point took a give-and-go pass from the Tampa captain, and raced in on Ron Hainsey, putting a quick shot by Hogberg.

Ottawa responded off the ensuing faceoff, however. A nice zone entry by Tierney, and a gorgeous pass by Erik Brannstrom found Connor Brown in front, and he fired a shot past Vasilevskiy to make it a one-goal game again.

Ottawa would get the tying goal at 15:46, when the hot hand of Anthony Duclair pulled off for a breakaway near the end of his shift (!). He beat Vasilevskiy with a nice move, and made it a 3-3 hockey game.

The Senators weathered a Lightning storm (haha) in the third, as Marcus Hogberg stood tall and kept things tied at 3-3.

The game would conclude in an insane overtime, most of which Thomas Chabot was on the ice for. The teams traded glorious chances, with both goaltenders making absurd saves, but it would be Anthony Cirelli that would end the game on a breakway with 19 seconds to go in the extra frame.

All in all, it was a solid game for a young Senators team. They were resilient, and didn’t back down, trading blows with an exceptionally talented Lightning team to the bitter end.

Game Notes

  • Though the fourth line of Brown-Beaudin-White was...strange, they were likely the Sens’ best combo tonight. Brown himself had his second really solid game in a row, relentless on the forecheck and making some great passes. White had some glorious chances, and Beaudin is a bit of an anchor with those two, but still a serviceable fourth line guy.
  • Marcus Hogberg is still searching for his first NHL win, but all things considered, he had a pretty good night. The first goal was a muffin, but his team didn’t help much on the others. Once Hoggy settled in, he made some big saves, and gave Ottawa a chance to win.
  • Thomas Chabot’s final TOI was a stunning 37:43. While anyone playing that much obviously isn’t ideal, Chabot looked really solid in those minutes, especially in overtime. I always say it, but he’s a really special player.
  • Erik Brannstrom was only in Belleville for four games, but he’s looked like a vastly improved player in his return. His feed to Brown on the goal was gorgeous, and he looks much more confident in his game. Branny is at his best when jumping into the rush and being creative, so hopefully he continues to do so./
