The Ottawa Senators and Nikolas Matinpalo have signed a two year extension. The Senators news release does not say if it is a one-way or two-way deal, but the lack of AHL salary mentioned would hint at a one-way contract.

Matinpalo played exactly half the season with Ottawa after starting the season in Belleville, and established himself as a solid option on the third pairing for the team. That continued into the playoffs, where he did not look out of place at all when paired with fellow break-out defender Tyler Kleven - also his main partner through the regular season.

Beyond breaking out with the Senators this season, he also represented Finland in the 4 Nations Face-Off in February.

The deal comes just two days after locker room clean out day, showing us that Steve Staios is not wasting any time getting down to business for the off-season.
