Ottawa Senators acquire Tommy Wingels from San Jose Sharks

Going out are Buddy Robinson, Zack Stortini and a 2017 7th round pick

The Sens made a deal today acquiring forward Tommy Wingels from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Buddy Robinson, Zack Stortini, and a 7th round pick from 2017.

Wingels, who’s been playing fourth line centre for the Sharks, has five goals and three assists in 37 games so far this season. He can also play right wing, and is expected to make the trip to Ottawa tonight and play his first game on Wednesday vs Calgary.

Set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, Wingels is currently at the tail end of a three-year deal making $2.475 mill. per year.

Outgoing are Buddy Robinson and Zack Stortini, who have both been playing for the Binghamton Senators. The 31-year-old Stortini, known for being a gritty player, has recently found himself in the press box for Binghamton as a healthy scratch.

The 25-year-old Robinson has been one of the better forwards for the B-Sens this season, amassing 7 goals and 5 assists in 33 games. Originally signed as a college free agent, the massive 6’5 Robinson has played a combined seven games for the Ottawa Senators over the last two seasons as a call-up.

Robinson will be an RFA at season’s end, whereas Stortini will be a UFA. Trading the 7th round pick now puts Ottawa with four picks in the 2017 draft.

Update: San Jose is retaining 30% of Wingels’ salary for the remainder of the year.
