Michael Del Zotto Signs Two-Year Deal with Ottawa Senators

The contract carries an AAV of $2 million.

The Ottawa Senators have added another defenceman, signing veteran blueliner Michael Del Zotto to a two-year deal, carrying an AAV of $2 million.

The one-way deal will see Del Zotto, 31, earn $1.75 million this coming season, and $2.25 million in 2022-2023.

A native of Stoufville, Ontario, Del Zotto is coming off of a 53-game season with the Columbus Blue Jackets, in which he scored four goals and added nine assists. Originally drafted 20th overall by the New York Rangers in 2008, Del Zotto’s 713-game NHL career has seen him appear with the Rangers, Blue Jackets, Nashville Predators, Philadelphia Flyers, Vancouver Canucks, Anaheim Ducks (two separate stints), and St. Louis Blues.

Del Zotto is the second left-handed blueliner that the Senators have added today, after adding Nick Holden from the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for Evgenii Dadonov. The team is now carrying eight defencemen, and five left-handers. With this much congestion, it seems possible that the Senators could be eyeing another trade. Postmedia’s Bruce Garrioch has speculated that one of RFA Victor Mete, and Erik Brannstrom could be on the move.

It’s worth noting that the Senators have been vocal in their desire to find a high-end centre, so it stands to reason that the two young blueliners could potentially be floated in a possible transaction.
