Matt Murray Signs Extension with Ottawa

It’s a 4 year deal, with a $6.25m AAV

It didn’t take too long for the Ottawa Senators to ink a contract extension with their new goaltender Matt Murray.

After Wednesday’s trade, the RFA has signed a four year, $25 million contract. The real money breaks down as $4M in year one, $6M in year two, $7M in year three and wraps up with $8M in the final year. That works out to a cap hit of $6.25M, a significant raise over the $3.75M per year his last contract carried.

The contract also includes a 10-team no trade list.

Notably, the $2.5M raise for Murray is roughly the amount of raises Ottawa needed to hand out to their RFAs to reach the cap floor. At this point they can reach it with their remaining qualifying offers and filling out the lineup with entry level contracts, so we can finally put the questions of how they are going to reach the cap floor to bed.
