Marcus Hogberg Signs 2 Year Extension

The two seasons carry different terms

The Ottawa Senators have re-signed budding goaltender Marcus Hogberg to a 2-year extension. The extension certainly comes with interesting terms as the first year is a two-way contract for $700,000  in the NHL($125,00 in the AHL) but the second year switches to a one-way contract worth $700,000. It could prove to be a  smart move to season Hogberg in the first year while they sort out the starting jobs in Ottawa, including Anderson’s future with the team.

The future of Mike Condon remains one of the universe’s dark mysteries.

The 24-year old Swedish goaltender was taken in the third round (78th overall) in the 2013 draft by the Ottawa Senators. He has been trying to solidify his position in Belleville and has faced some challenges and competition. In his first pro season in North America, Hogberg split some time between the AHL and ECHL helping him transition his game to the next level. He made his debut in Ottawa this past December, and had a total of 4 games with the big club. While his numbers in Ottawa were not great (0-2-1, 4.09 GAA, 0.884 sv%), it was a small sample size at a time where he wasn’t really given any chance of succeeding. In the AHL, Hogberg had a promising season playing 39 games with  a 21-17-4 record and named the team MVP.

It does seem the team is priming Hogberg to be in Ottawa long term, and it will be interesting to see how that spot will become available.
