Yesterday it was Sydney, today's it's Sidney (Crosby, in Halifax), and we've got all the reading you need to start your week off right.

  • The Sens beat the Panthers yesterday, and here's your recap and highlights of an entertaining 4–2 victory.
  • Sydney was super pumped to have the two NHL teams show up. Most of all, it's great to see the excitement from the kids.
  • Some updates on the whole Hockeyville goings-on, including the participation by the Mi'kmaq First Nation and the fact that the arena to be renovated by the Hockeyville funds is focused on girls' hockey
  • Meanwhile, the Sens take on the Penguins tonight in Halifax, and the Pens will be icing a full roster—yes, that includes Erik Karlsson
  • The Ducks claimed Lassi Thomson off waivers, which, if you look at the full list of players on waivers from TSN, it's surprising anyone even noticed him
  • Jacob Billington says the Sens' reported offer of 1 year, $1M to Shane Pinto was disrespectful. I kind of disagree. If you want to take the Sens' side of the argument, you're basically telling the player that this will get him in the best possible lineup now, where he'll get the chance to earn a huge raise when the cap goes up (and buyout cap hits come off the books). I can see why Pinto doesn't want to ink a deal like that, but now the Sens need to offload a player to make him fit.
  • Ian Mendes takes a look at why Michael Andlauer wanted Steve Staios so much.
  • Adam Proteau argues that the Ducks need to follow a model with their young stars similar to the one the Sens have done. Ottawa as a model franchise, who knew?
  • Bruce Garrioch isn't worried about what's going on with Shane Pinto, which means, on this rare occasion, I agree with him.
  • Alex Adams looks at the three most likely scenarios for fitting in Pinto, and they're the ones you'd expect: trade Joseph, trade Brännström, or waive Joseph+Kelly+JBD
  • Who is better right now, the Sens or Leafs? Adams takes a look, and says it's pretty evenly matched. The Leafs are still the better team in my opinion, but that gap is narrowing as the Leafs' core ages and the Sens' core comes of age.
  • The Daily Faceoff has some rookies to keep an eye on this NHL season, including former possible Sens draft pick Marco Rossi.
  • Brandon Sutter's PTO with the Oilers was terminated, and he's announced he's retiring from hockey. In my mind, he's best remembered as a guy Jim Rutherford traded away from his team twice.
  • In sad news, Flames Assistant GM Chris Snow passed away from ALS complications at age 42, making him the fifth member of his family to succumb to this terrible disease. We also express our condolences to his family and friends, and any who have been touched by ALS.
  • Each of The Athletic's team writer examines a burning question for each team. Ian Mendes' is a great question: who emerges as the number one among Chychrun, Chabot, and Sanderson?
  • Kristen Shilton looks at who's most likely to miss and make the playoffs from each division. Her pick to miss in the Atlantic (the Lightning) wouldn't have been mine (I'd pick Boston), but she has the Sabres over the Sens to make it.
  • Carol Schram uses the Oilers' camp as an example of what bubble players can learn from training camp.
  • A closer look at Jessica Campbell and Kori Cheverie, two female coaches breaking barriers in the NHL.
  • Speaking of women in hockey, here's the full list of all PWHL camp invitees.
  • And lastly, here's a look at Spartacat pumping up the crowds in Nova Scotia
