Drake Batherson, Alex Formenton invited to Team Canada’s World Junior development camp
Logan Brown and Markus Nurmi also received invites yesterday
Senators fans were spoiled the last couple years with Thomas Chabot and Colin White playing prominent roles in the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships. They may not have the same prominence, but two more Sens prospects will have a shot at making Team Canada this year in Alex Formenton and Drake Batherson. Both were invited to the Team Canada development camp.
Formenton was the Sens’ 47th-overall pick in the 2017 draft. He currently has 21 points in 17 games, after starting the season with the big club and playing in one game. Even more telling is the fact that Formenton’s London Knights had one win in 10 games right before his return, and have gone 12-4-1 since. Batherson was drafted 121st overall, and has posted 37 points in 22 games. Unfortunately he’s out with a broken hand, and is hoping to return just in time for the World Juniors. It may end up costing him a spot after an impressive breakout season. Neither is guaranteed a spot, but Bob McKenzie had them listed as frontrunners to make the final team.
In other news, Logan Brown was announced as an invitee to Team USA’s camp. This will be Brown’s first World Juniors after surprisingly being left off last year’s roster. He earned his first NHL assist during a four-game stint with the Sens to start the year, and currently has 21 points in 13 games for the Windsor Spitfires. He seems like a lock to make Team USA. Markus Nurmi was named to Finland’s development camp roster. Seeing as he’s playing in Finland’s top men’s league, he’s pretty likely to make his squad. Hopefully Sens fans will be looking forward to watching four prospects play come Boxing Day.
