It's official: ALFIE'S BACK!

Although the writing's been on the wall for a while, it was made official today: Ottawa Senators captain and all-time leader in just about everything Daniel Alfredsson will return for a 17th NHL season.

There are no updates on rumours of a possible contract extension for Alfredsson.

Obviously, this is exciting news for many reasons, but it's especially important for the on-ice success of the team. Alfie can't be expected to carry the team as much as he once did, but is one of just four proven top-six players on the squad, along with Jason Spezza, Milan Michalek, and Kyle Turris (and that's if you include Turris in that category at this point, despite his inexperience). If Alfie weren't returning, things would be a lot more difficult for the team's top scoring lines.

Anyway, breathe a sigh of relief, Sens fans: Your captain won't be hanging up his skates for at least one more season. Alfie Rises.
