Celebrate Valentine's Day with Ottawa Senators Love Songs

It's amazing how well popular music and sports go together.

It's Valentine's Day, which means the Hallmark definition of love is all around us: cards, chocolates, flowers, and lots and lots of sappy love songs. And though we may get sick of these songs, there are many that remind of us important memories, such as our favourite Ottawa Senators players. Here are a few ditties that remind me of Sens players every time they come on the radio:

Nothing Compares 2 U by Sinéad O'Connor for Erik Karlsson

Seriously, nothing compares to the Sens' captain. The media seems intent on giving Drew Doughty a lifetime achievement award for the Norris this season, ignoring that EK is having one of the greatest offensive seasons by a defenceman ever. Not to mention he's been just fine defensively. Seriously, Habs fans are getting angry at the thought of him not winning. The legendary Paul Coffey is campaigning for him, and that article was published in the Toronto Sun! Just know, Karlsson, that even if you don't win the Norris, we all know that nothing compares, nothing compares....... 2u.

Unchained Melody by Righteous Brothers for Daniel Alfredsson

"Oh my love, my darling, I've hungered for your touch a long lonely time. And time goes by so slowly, and time can do so much; are you still mine?" Timeless words that effortlessly capture the depth of Sens fans' emotions when Alfie signed with Detroit, before December 2014 when he retired as a Senator. The classic love song used to describe the classic Senator. What could be more right?

Take My Breath Away by Berlin for Mark Stone

As of Saturday night, Stone is the league's leader in takeaways by 34. It's only right that he take our collective breath away every time he dazzles on the ice with his slick hands and gorgeous moves.

Need You Now by Lady Antebellum for Clarke MacArthur

We all knew MacArthur was important to the team, but I don't think we realized how important until he was injured for most of the season. Suddenly Ottawa's top-six is floundering, Cameron's lineup choices would make you think he was a little drunk, and the Sens need him now.

Crazy In Love by Beyoncé (f. Jay-Z) for Zack Smith

Smith's scoring touch is just ridiculous this year, and it's making lots of people make strange decisions like putting him as the top-line winger. Maybe it'll push another GM to offer up something like a 1st-round pick for him.

Come Away With Me by Norah Jones for Mike Hoffman

Hoffman is a free agent this summer, and I think we can all agree that the Sens need to lock him up long-term. I think it'd be ideal if Hoffman would just come away with us for a long time.

Five Long Years by Colin James for Craig Anderson

We're four days away from the five-year anniversary of the Anderson for Elliott trade. As a market with a reputation as a goaltender graveyard, that's basically an eternity. He still looks great most nights despite his age, which is something I think we take for granted far too often.

New Kid in Town by Eagles for Dion Phaneuf

Phaneuf is clearly the "Johnny come lately" on the Sens, and there is a lot of pressure on him to not let people down. There are also a good number of people who are pretty sick of hearing about him. For better or for worse, he'll be under scrutiny at least until the Sens get a win.

Someday My Prince Will Come by Miles Davis for Shane Prince

A lot of the stats are saying Prince is a top-six forward, and yet Murray keeps saying he wants one more. Someday Prince will get his shot, and I hope it's with Ottawa but I'm not sure.

Smile by Uncle Kracker for Curtis Lazar

This one doesn't need explaining.

Love Hurts by Nazareth for Chris Neil

Neil loves this team, and sometimes that means fighting a teammate in practice. Call it tough love, because you'd never accuse him of not giving his all. And when he punches an opponent's face? Maybe he's just spreading the love to the other franchises.

3 Dressed Up As A 9 by Trooper for Alex Chiasson

Chiasson was supposed to be the key piece in the Jason Spezza deal, but he's turning out to be a dud. He looked a whole lot better from a conference away. He started his career with six goals in seven games, but this season he's scored three goals in 52 games.

Love Will Keep Us Together by Captain & Tennille for Patrick Wiercioch

Wiercioch is turning RFA, and is probably getting sick of being jerked around by the organization yet again. But the analytics fans love him, and that should be enough to keep him in Ottawa, right?

Fast As I Can by Great Big Sea for Cody Ceci

Ceci got rushed into the NHL -- I don't think anyone would deny that. Rather than getting the chance to round out his game playing top minutes in the AHL, he got thrust into a top-four NHL role and has had to try to find his game. To be far to the guy, he's going fast as he can. And I think we're seeing flashes from him, such as last night's slap-shot bullet against the Blue Jackets. I'm not ready to say I love him yet, but I think he's maturing.

So that does it for current Sens (+ Alfie), but I think it's fair to bring in a couple of players who recently became ex-Sens, in the spirit of inclusivity.

It Must Have Been Love by Roxette for Milan Michalek

It's amazing how once Milo was traded, everyone realized what a valuable member of the franchise he was. Two years ago, everyone was complaining about the extension he signed in Ottawa, but his veteran presence, his ability to play on any line, and his humility endeared him to fans. Even his final move as a Senator, changing his no-trade list so the Sens could trade him to Toronto, demonstrated his selflessness. No doubt, he'll be missed.

Irreplaceable by Beyoncé for Jared Cowen

Cowen's on the complete other end of the spectrum. He gained notoriety for telling the media that he didn't pay much attention when Bryan Murray said the team was expecting more from him. He never seemed to get that he wasn't playing well. The Sens could've had another him in a minute, and they did. They threw everything he owned in a box to the left and shipped him to the Maple Leafs. I guess he fell into the trap of thinking he was irreplaceable.

So that does it for this silly little countdown. Hopefully the next time some terrible cheesy love song comes on the radio, rather than changing the channel, you'll be inspired to think about how it could apply to your favourite Sens player. Happy Valentine's Day from all of us here at Silver Seven, and if you're lucky enough to be somewhere you get tomorrow off, have a great holiday Monday!
