Alex Chiasson Traded to the Calgary Flames for Pat Sieloff

Chiasson was likely not going to be qualified by the Sens

As the qualifying offer deadline approached, the only question that remained was as to whether Alex Chiasson would be qualified or not. Patrick Wiercioch was not going to be qualified at $2.7M, and the rest of the RFAs clearly were going to be qualified (all of this has been confirmed). The Sens answered the final question by shipping Chiasson's rights off to the Calgary Flames, receiving prospect defenceman Pat Sieloff in return.

Chiasson never really clicked in Ottawa after coming over from the Stars in the Jason Spezza trade, putting up only 40 points in 153 games, a far cry from the seven points in seven games to start his NHL career. The Sens were openly shopping Chiasson's services, and it's nice to see the team get anything back in exchange for him.

Sieloff was a second-round pick, 42nd overall in 2012. After participating in the USNTDP to that point, he joined the Windsor Spitfires, and put up a lacklustre 11 points in 45 games. He has 16 points in 102 career AHL games (11 points in 52 games last year), to go along with a goal in the only NHL game of his career. His career has taken a bit of a hit due to a staph infection that kept him out a full season, as well as a continual shift between forward and defence. He was 31st in Matchsticks & Gasoline's Top 25 Under 25 last year.
