Alex Chiasson Awarded One-Year, $1.2m Contract

Chiasson's contract came down from the arbitrator early in the morning of July 26th.

Alex Chiasson's arbitration award was given on Sunday morning. The contract is for one year, at a salary of $1.2 million. Chiasson's filing was for $2.475-million, while the Senators' countered with $1-million. The contract is a better value than expected for Chiasson, who many predicted to come out around $1.5-million (including me).

Chiasson had 11 goals and 15 assists in 76 games last year. He also had zero points in four playoff games, being a healthy scratch for the final two. He came over as part of the Jason Spezza trade with the Stars last summer. Many viewed him as the centrepiece of that trade, though many fans are more excited about Nick Paul now. In his NHL career, Chiasson has 30 goals and 38 assists in 162 regular season games, and a goal and an assist in 10 playoff games. He also has 14 goals and 26 assists in 66 career AHL games.

With the Chiasson signing, the Sens now have 11 forwards on one-way contracts as well as Curtis Lazar. Mike Hoffman will join the ranks of the one-way contracts after his arbitration hearing on July 31. With players on two-way contracts including Shane Prince and Matt Puempel expected to push for roster spots out of training camp, it is likely the Sens will try to offload a forward by the end of the summer. I'm not holding by breath that they manage to do it though.
