Sens Acquire DeBrincat

Hours before the 2022 NHL Entry Draft got under way, the Ottawa Senators acquired Chicago Blackhawks right winger Alex DeBrincat for a package which includes Ottawa’s 2022 first round selection.

If you were looking forward to seeing who the Ottawa Senators were going to draft 7th overall this evening, I have bad news for you.

If you were looking to see if the Senators were going to add a win-now piece to their young core, I have fantastic news for you.

The Ottawa Senators have sent their 2022 7th overall and 39th overall selections, as well as a 2024 third round pick to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Alex DeBrincat.

DeBrincat, 24, has scored a total of 160 goals through his 368 game career, all with Chicago, which is a pace of 35 goals per season. Most notably, since the start of the 2020-21 season, DeBrincat has scored 73 goals in 134 games - or 45 goals over an 82 game span. Needless to say, DeBrincat’s ability to put the puck in the net while making his linemates better is going to be crucial to the Senators taking the next step into respectability around the NHL.

In an incredibly important offseason, GM Pierre Dorion has made a massive splash being able to acquire a young goal scoring player without touching anyone on his roster or a high end prospect like Ridly Greig.

Alex, welcome to Ottawa!
