So the only source that I can find for this is Dobber, but apparently the Flyers have not offered a contract to Connor McClennon and so he is now a UFA. Whether there is an interest from the player is a whole other question, but the Senators should definitely do their best to bring this kid in. The only thing you lose is a roster slot, and he has good upside.
The kid has been over a point-per-game in the WHL over the past three seasons, with the most recent season being easily his best. He's only been to the playoffs once in major junior, this year with the Ice, and he put up 21 points in 15 games. The Ice were definitely a strong offensive team because of Matthew Savoie and Conor Geekie, but McClennon was right there helping drive the offense as well.
He's definitely on the smaller side, listed at 5'8", 160 lbs., but having a couple of those guys mixed in wouldn't hurt our already large-framed roster. I think it's also fair to say playing with a guy like Savoie helped boost his numbers, but he was good enough to play Savoie, which isn't nothing.
Do I think this signing fixes the hole in the Top-6? Not at all. But I think it's a low-risk, high-reward signing where maybe you get a skilled third line guy who can play up and down the line-up in a pinch. Worse case scenario he stinks it up in Belleville for a year or two, and we all forget he was ever signed.
