Ottawa Senators Prospect Update: April 27th

A solid if unspectacular week on the farm

Even while the Belleville Senators have struggled this season in the wake of so many key graduations (and as a result of some untimely injuries) and the Senators’ organizational footprint has gradually shrunk in the NCAA and overseas, you won’t hear many fans complaining because the Ottawa Senators have played some of the most convincing hockey this fanbase has seen in years. Recently we’ve seen flashes of Ottawa’s future potential as a bonafide NHL team and despite that, you can still find a handful of decent prospects scattered about North America and Europe. You can feel the season winding down and most of these youngsters have their eyes on bigger roles next season as opposed to playoff action. With that said, let’s take a look around for the last time this April.

Team of the Week

Forwards

Cole Reinhardt

While not Ottawa’s most hyped selection out of Brandon this past summer, Reinhardt has made a name for himself in the Senators’ system fairly quickly with some strong play in Belleville. In his rookie campaign, Reinhardt has become one of the BSens’ key offensive contributors and may have just had his best week yet with three points in three games.

Ridly Greig

For those of you keeping track, Ridly now has 30 points and 80 shots through 20 games with Brandon this season. At this point, a three-point, nine-shot week seems like business as usual for Greig.

Egor Sokolov

While I’d love to diversify and write about some other Belleville forwards, Egor the oversized, over-ager continues to provide the lion’s share of the goals down on the farm for the Senators. The one-man wrecking crew continued to torment the Canadian division this week.

Defence

Maxence Guénette

Guénette and Val d’Or have established a 2-0 series lead over Baie-Comeau with two convincing wins at home. The young blueliner has contributed two goals to the cause thus far.

Lassi Thomson

As Spencer noted in his latest Belleville recap, Thomson has begun to complement his offence with some more sound defensive play lately for a BSens team in desperate need of—everything.

Goaltender

Kevin Mandolese

Slim pickin’s here as only Mandolese and Filip Gustavsson suited up for the Sens’ affiliates this week, and Mandolese narrowly beat out Gustavsson in terms of save percentage. Both went winless.

Silver Linings:

  • Roby Järventie’s season with the Lynx has come to an end after a brief playoff appearance. The young winger notched one assist in five postseason games.
  • Due to COVID-19, Viktor Lodin’s postseason remains on hiatus. The league intends to resume the finals on April 30th if all goes according to plan.
  • The Moncton Wildcats have started their postseason round-robin with one win and two losses with top centre Philipe Daoust still sidelined with injury.
  • Mark Kastelic has played exceptionally well since returning from injury and added another goal and assist this week./
  • While Angus Crookshank cooled off slightly with only one goal this week and no assists, the first-year pro continues firing at will with ten more shots on net./
  • Although off to a modest start by his own standards, Logan Brown’s two assists this week should have fans feeling cautiously optimistic again about the oft-injured centre.
  • In Ottawa, all of Drake Batherson, Josh Norris, and Tim Stützle added to their goal totals. Meanwhile Alex Formenton, Erik Brännström, and Shane Pinto played decently while not registering any points./
