Ottawa Senators Grab Victor Mete Off Waivers From Montreal Canadiens

Sens are taking a flier on a young player with upside

After making a couple of subtractions last night, the Ottawa Senators have made an addition, claiming defenceman Victor Mete off of waivers from the Montreal Canadiens.

A fourth-round draft pick of the Canadiens in 2016, Mete has appeared in just 14 games this season, tallying three assists. The Woodbridge, Ontario native has 185 NHL games under his belt, with four goals — all coming last year — and 30 assists for 34 points during that span.

Mete, 22, is a skilled puck-mover, who for whatever reason hasn’t been able to consistently crack the Montreal lineup this year. That said, his underlying metrics are fairly flattering, with a 54.68% Corsi rating and 51.37% xG%. Mete addresses an immediate need for the Senators, currently only having Thomas Chabot, Erik Brannstrom, Cody Goloubef, and rookie Olle Alsing as options on the left side.

Per the Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch, Mete will make the drive over from Montreal, and could even suit up tonight against the Winnipeg Jets.

Mete is wrapping up a one-year, $735K contract, at the end of which he will be a restricted free agent. The Senators now have contractual control for any negotiations that take place this summer.
