Ottawa Senators Prospect Update March 16th

It’s playoff time for some top prospects

Even if the post-season seems like the most remote of dreams for the Ottawa Senators and (surprisingly) their counterparts in Belleville, the Senators will have some representatives in NCAA tournament action and in overseas playoff action. Not to mention, we still get to enjoy some quality prospects here in our own backyard as the Ottawa Senators slowly make their way back to respectability. With that said, we have some standouts from the past week in Sensland:

Forwards

Vitaly Abramov

File under: players we have sorely missed around these parts. Vitaly had a goal and an assist, respectively, in Belleville’s last two games. As much as I would love to see someone like Abramov get called up to Ottawa, Belleville doesn’t have much left to give in terms of depth and Abramov will get a lot of good minutes down on the farm.

Tim Stützle

Timmy Jim gets an automatic spot on the list based on the absurd feed he made to Drake Batherson during Sunday night’s spirited affair:

Shane Pinto

Known player who constantly exceeds our expectations did it again this year by winning more accolades during the regular season than I care to list. What a stud.

Defence

Jacob Bernard-Docker

JBD had some kind of game last Friday against Miami notching a goal and an assist before a bizarre spill into the boards ended his night and kept him out of Monday’s game against Denver. Let’s all hope for a speedy recovery for one of our favouritest good dudes!

Lassi Thomson

Lassi remains a positive on a Belleville blueline that has seen better days. Expect his offensive output to increase as the Baby Senators gradually learn to eat steak.

Goaltending

Joey Daccord

As if you thought it could be anyone else (and he had good competition!). When you get your first NHL victory against Ottawa’s most despised rival, you automatically get a place on this list. We’ll ride the high from this one for a while. Congratulations, Joey!

Silver Linings

  • Mads Søgaard and his crew from Esbjerg currently have a 2-0 series lead in their quarterfinal match-up in the Metal Ligaen postseason with Mads winning his one and only start of the series thus far. Game three is today.
  • Sharing the spotlight, Leevi Meriläinen has yet to cool down with a save percentage still over 93 through over twenty games this season. Give him whatever goaltending award exists in his obscure Finnish league.
  • Based on my poor ability to read Google-translated Swedish, Viktor Lodin and his Timra squad get a bye through the first round of the playoffs after finishing first in the regular season standings.
  • Jakov Novak went out guns-a-blazin’ in his season finale with a four-point, four-shot performance. At 22 years of age, we could see Novak sign with the Senators sooner rather than later assuming he decides to go pro.
  • UND defeated Denver in the NCHC Frozen Faceoff semi-final in overtime 2-1 last night with Shane Pinto assisting on the late, tying goal and Jake Sanderson assisting on the game-winner.
  • After a lengthy hiatus, Philippe Daoust and the Moncton Wildcats have resumed play and the young centre didn’t miss a beat, maintaining his point-per-game pace.
  • On the not-so pleasant side of the ledger, Ridly Greig will serve a three-game suspension for a really boneheaded hit from behind last week. Don’t do it again.
