Do You Remember These Sens Guys?

It’s time to Remember some Ottawa Guys

I’m an unabashed fan of the good people at Defector, as well as the iteration of Deadspin that existed until last year with all of the same staff. The brashness, sometimes crudeness, of the writing style is not for everyone, but for my money there isn’t a better site out there when it comes to sports writing — especially the kind of sports writing that goes beyond the boxscore. Clearly not everyone agrees with me about that because their refusal to “stick to sports” ended with the death of Deadspin as we knew it around this time last year.

But I digress.

One of the best features going these days at Defector is a continuation of something David Roth, often ably accompanied by Lauren Theisen, has become mildly internet-famous for: Remembering Some Guys. Here’s a classic of the genre:

Remembering Guys is exactly what it sounds like, and it’s something I’m sure you’ve all done many, many times as Sens fans while you’re shooting the shit with other fans. “Remember THAT guy?!” Every sports fan loves remembering Guys; the more obscure, the better.

So in that spirit, I’ve gathered a collection of my favourite Sens Guys. I’d love to hear some more of your favourite Sens Guys in the comments below.

Remember these Guys?

Jody Hull:

Hull was on the very first Sens team, played a bunch of years for the Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Philadelphia Flyers before returning to Ottawa for three more season in 01-02. Hull’s career high point total was 37 but he still played nearly 850 career regular season games. And look at that soul patch! The very definition of a Guy:

Stanislav Neckar:

The 29th overall selection in 1994, Stan never quite lived up to his billing but he still managed to play 510 games in the NHL — including stops in Phoenix, Nashville (for 1 game!), and Tampa Bay where he won the Stanley Cup. Stan’s maybe most famous in Ottawa for this truly incredible cover of Bodycheck magazine. What a Guy:

Steve Martins:

Martins remains one of the fastest skaters I’ve ever seen play for the Sens, and thus I was always unreasonably optimistic about his abilities. Martins had 3 (!) different stints with the Sens over the course of his career, and in total he played 80 of his 267 career games with the franchise. When he re-emerged with the team in 2005-06 after the lockout, I remember thinking it was like having an old friend back. Just look at him, could he be anything BUT a hockey Guy:

So, join me: let’s Remember Some Guys together.
