A look at some of the stories pertaining to the Sens and all over the league

When the well is dry, the well is truly dry. There hasn’t been much by the way of breaking news, unless you count Colton Sissons signing a 7 year contract with the Nashville Predators. I will say that signing a depth player to that kind of term carries with it a not insignificant amount of risk. There’s a decent chance the Preds are going to get good value in the first couple of years of the deal, when Sissons is right in his prime, but paying a third (or fourth) line centre $2.86M when they’re 33 could be tricky. Sens fans know that tune all too well.

The Maple Leafs also traded for the right to continue to not employ David Clarkson through the machinations of LTIR. It’s a money move, it helps them free up space. I dunno, it wasn’t that exciting.

So there wasn’t much by the way of news, but there was some good writing to share:

  • In Ottawa-specific scribbling, Graeme Nichols has a piece summarizing the Sens’ summer of cost-cutting. It’s not news to anyone reading this, but Ottawa isn’t exactly striving to break the bank on player salaries this year. It’s still a bit jarring to see how severe the cost cutting truly is.
  • Sean Fitzgerald had a fun little piece over at the Athletic in which he spoke to some of Hockey’s Insiders about their jobs, and how they unwind over the summer. It’s become common place to cast doubt on how plugged in the “insiders” are these days, but you gotta respect the work they put in.
  • Mark Lazerus did an unconventional workout with an NHL trainer and he...suffered. A good reminder of how far pro athletes are from the rest of us mere mortals.
  • Lastly, Sergei Bobrovsky seems to have been pretty sure he was leaving Columbus for a long, long time. It’s rare to hear a player speak so plainly about their desire to leave, so it’s refreshing to get a bit more than the typical “it wasn’t the right fit” cliches /
