The Senators’ Search For a Depth Forward

The Ottawa Senators wrapped up their desert road trip this week with their third consecutive loss, and it came at a cost. Both Colin White and Artem Anisimov will be out of action due to injury for the next few weeks, leaving the forward lines even more barren than before. They held their own against the Detroit Red Wings picking up their second win of the season, but Dorion and co. may be looking to make a move. - According to Darren Dreger, the Senators are in back in the trading market looking for another depth forward. There’s been no word on who they might target, although the player is expected to be around a similar level to Vladislav Namestnikov, who they acquired recently. The one thing standing in their way is the contract limit — they’re near the brink with 49 signed players out of a possible 50, meaning another acquisition would give up their flexibility. It will also be interesting to see what price they’re willing to pay, assuming they’re willing to give up draft picks. It’s supposed to be a rebuilding year, after all, so every pick to them should be valuable.
- With Logan Brown called up for yesterday’s game, Ian Mendes had a great story on his relationship with Brady Tkachuk, and their childhood friendship being reunited in the NHL. The Sens have definitely been focusing on surrounding prospects with familiar teammates (Josh Norris and Tkachuk, Jonny Tychonick and Jacob Bernard-Docker), so it’s neat to see one of these duos coming to fruition in the NHL.
- The Ottawa Hockey Analytics Conference has been a staple for some of the brightest minds in hockey presenting their research, and it’s coming up soon on November 15th and 16th. For those interested, registration opened this week, and will include talks about data-centred coaching strategies, a workshop on visualizing statistics, and more.
