Game 67 Preview: Calgary Flames @ Ottawa Senators

The second half of the back-to-back homestand.

It’s another Sens game day, with the visiting Calgary Flames (33-25-10) trying to squeeze back into a Western Conference playoff spot by taking on the Ottawa Senators (23-32-11).

Ottawa, fresh off a 4-3 shootout loss to the Sabres last night, have only managed to earn six of a possible eighteen points over their last nine games. The Flames’ last game was also against the Sabres on Wednesday, dismantling them 5-1 as six players had a multi-point night.

Lineup Notes

One small roster change, as Max McCormick will replace Jim O’Brien on the fourth line. Tom Pyatt will become the fourth line centre, a position we haven’t seen him frequent very often.

Mike Condon will be starting tonight, as Craig Anderson played yesterday. He’ll be taking on David Rittich at the other end.

Projected Lineup

Using yesterday’s combos, combined with the small changes.

Hoffman - Duchene - Dzingel
Paajarvi - Pageau - Stone
Ryan - Smith - Gaborik
McCormick - Pyatt - Burrows

Claesson - Karlsson
Harpur - Ceci
Chabot - Borowiecki

Condon (starter)
Anderson

Game Notes

  • Today is Ryan Dzingel’s birthday! Turning 26 years old, he was the hot hand last night with two goals. He’s already smashed his previous career high in goals, although his 17.9% shooting percentage raises a red flag.
  • Johnny Gaudreau has been unstoppable this season. He recently had a four-game point drought, his longest of the season, although has since bounced back with three assists in his last two games.
  • It’s game #67, and a former Ottawa 67 will be visiting in Sean Monahan. He’s only four points  away from passing his career high in points, and at 23 years of age, he already has five seasons with 20+ goals.
  • Coursing through Ottawa’s line stats, the surprising trio at the top was Ryan-Pageau-Stone, who in 55 minutes together this season have a Corsi% of 64.2%. Might be worth an extended look, which should be simpler now that Pageau’s firmly planted in the top six.
  • It’s another 7:30 p.m. start. Only sixteen more games ‘till the draft lottery./
