Ian Cole Flipped to Columbus Blue Jackets for Draft Pick
The Sens receive a 3rd round pick and prospect Nick Moutrey.
Pierre Dorion kicked off the 2018 NHL trade deadline with the first deal of the day, trading Ian Cole to the Columbus Blue Jackets. In return, the Senators will receive a 3rd round pick in the 2020 draft, and 22-year-old forward Nick Moutrey.
This is an expected move, as the Senators acquired Cole on Saturday via the Derick Brassard trade, with the intention to flip the pending UFA. Jarmo Kekalainen, the Blue Jackets general manager, was part of the team in St. Louis that drafted Cole in 2007.
Coming back is forward prospect Nick Moutrey, who was drafted 105th by the Blue Jackets at 2013 NHL draft. After setting a career-high in points last season in the AHL (17 in 61 games), he’s followed it up with an injury-riddled 2017-18 season, where he’s only played 22 games. He’s healthy now, with three assists in his last six games.
The 6’3” forward won the Calder Cup as a rookie with the Lake Erie Monsters in 2016, although he only played two playoff games.
The third round pick is already the fourth traded draft choice from 2020.
