Mark Borowiecki Suspended for One Game
His elbow to Boston’s Urho Vaakanainen results in the second suspension of his career.
The NHL Department of Player Safety has suspended Mark Borowiecki for one game, following his elbow to Urho Vaakanainen in yesterday’s 4-1 loss to the Boston Bruins.
For Borowiecki, a veteran defenceman of over 250 games, this will be his second career suspension, previously being withheld from two games in December 2016 for his hit to the head on Kings forward Tyler Toffoli. Borowiecki will forfeit $6,451.61 in salary going to the department of player safety, and will miss Ottawa’s game this Friday against Colorado, the first of the Sens’ three-game road trip.
While the department of player safety believes Borowiecki’s argument that the head being the point of contact was unintentional, he is still being held responsible for his actions. Vaakanainen suffered an injury, playing in only his second NHL game. There was no penalty call made on the play.
The suspension comes at a peculiar time for Borowiecki, as only two days ago he made strong comments towards George Parros and the department of player safety following a hit he took from Brendan Gallagher in his previous game. He called for more action, and that’s exactly what he received.
