Ottawa Senators Sign Chris VandeVelde to PTO
The former flyers forward could serve as an additional depth piece
The Ottawa Senators have joined the PTO party this afternoon, as forward Chris VandeVelde will be attending the Sens’ training camp in hopes of getting a contract. VandeVelde, a 30-year-old from Minnesota, has spent his last four seasons playing in the NHL and AHL for the Philadelphia Flyers organization.
The move doesn’t come as a surprise, as Dorion has stated a few times that he’ll look to sign a couple PTOs, in search for an extra depth forward. VandeVelde would fit the bill, as he scored 15 points in 81 games last season on the Flyers’ fourth line. The Sens already have twelve forwards on one-way contracts, plus Colin White pushing to make the roster, so it remains to be seen whether the organization views VandeVelde as an option worth signing.
VandeVelde played an average of 11:33 per game last year — 9:00 at even strength, 2:30 on the penalty kill, and 0:03 on the power play. Although he can play centre, he only took a total 42 faceoffs last year, playing mostly the left wing.
With the rookie tournament finished, training camp starts next week.
