Binghamton Shutout 5-0 To St. John’s

Four goal outburst in the third sinks rookie netminder Marcus Hogberg & the BSens

The feel good atmosphere that surrounded the Binghamton locker room after Friday night’s comeback win over Syracuse soon evaporated on Saturday with a 5-0 loss by the visiting St. John’s IceCaps. It was a battle of two rookie goaltenders with Zachary Fucale coming up on top with his first professional win in three attempts. Prospect goaltender Marcus Hogberg also got the start for his second pro game and came up with 22 saves in the loss.

After a scoreless first period, the 22-year-old Swede looked poised and in control. If he had any butterflies it didn’t show in his first game in Binghamton.

But St. John’s struck first just 0:54 seconds into the second when Hogberg stopped a one-timer from the circle by Chris Terry, however Jacob de la Rose was there for the rebound as he lifted the puck over his pads for a 1-0 lead.

Hogberg made 17 saves after two periods with his best coming from a stretched out reaction on forward Nikita Scherbak with the results of an odd man rush, as he received a pass from Terry from along the wall but was denied by Hogberg with a right leg pad save. For a big guy, Hogberg can get down low in a hurry while maintaining his balance and tracking the puck. Very impressive skills early on.

That would be all the scoring so far as the two teams participated in the chippy style of play with several melee’s after whistles were blown.

But Binghamton would falter in the third as the IceCaps broke it open with four unanswered goals. The first wasn’t all on Hogberg with a screen set up in front, as he never saw St. John’s defenseman Zach Redmond’s floater from the point that went in for the second power play mark of the night that put the IceCaps in front 2-0.

Forward Niki Petti soon made it 3-0 St. John’s by pouncing on a rebound for his first goal in his pro debut. Give credit to Anthony Camara though, with his hustle and a smart bounce pass around Sens rookie Gabriel Gagne to himself off the boards in center ice. He continued on into the offensive zone and his wrister was dismissed by Hogberg, but unfortunately the rebound was up for the taking in front.

The fourth goal was a quick set-up pass from rookie Daniel Audette by the corner of the cage to the stick of Bobby Farnham in front, as the veteran found an opening near the crease and made the simple put-in for his 11th of the season.

A wrap-around attempt by Stefan Matteau was successful with just under six seconds left as he made Hogberg look bad as this was a rough night in new surroundings for his second professional game on North American soil. I can say this, he is leaps and bounds better than most rookie goaltenders I’ve seen in their first few games here.

POST GAME NOTES

  • Hogberg looked seasoned. He takes a lot of space with his 6’5” 196 lb. frame and played his angles well. Quick on his feet with a butterfly style. Rebounds were killers though on several occasions tonight and with that last goal showed he’s needs some time in developing. But, he didn’t get much support in front either and that was the same story in Wednesday’s 5-2 loss in Rochester.
  • Akeson-Varone-Blunden, McCormick-Paul-Hagel, Boucher-Nehring-Rodewald, McParland-Flanagan-Gagne. Englund/Carlisle, Gormley/Erkamps, Rumble/Murray. Sieloff, Bailey, Perron & Lepine injured. Lough & Beaudoin healthy./
