Ottawa Senators Recall Ben Harpur from Binghamton

The Ottawa Senators announced this morning that they’ve recalled Ben Harpur from the AHL. A 4th round pick from the Sens in 2013, Harpur played one game earlier this season, logging 10:35 and blocking two shots.

Harpur’s has had himself a bit of an offensive breakout this season, amassing 28 points in 63 games after just having six last season. He hits, he blocks, and he logs big minutes, which led to assistant general manager Randy Lee calling him “one of the top defencemen in the American Hockey League this year”.

The move comes in the midst of a slew of defensive injuries for Ottawa. Marc Methot is still a ways away from returning after taking a slash against the Penguins, Erik Karlsson is back in Ottawa after blocking a shot against Philadelphia, and Cody Ceci went down last night against Winnipeg. Karlsson’s expected to be back for Ottawa’s next home game, whereas Ceci’s status remains unknown. All three players have been logging over 20 minutes a night, which should pose some problems for a Sens team that has lost their last four straight.

The Sens take a break today, and hit the ice tomorrow to face the Detroit Red Wings to wrap up their five game road trip.
