The Ottawa Senators have placed defenseman Fredrik Claesson on waivers.

The 23-year-old has one year left on his two-way contract, and if he passes through the waiver wire, he’ll begin the season with the Senators’ AHL affiliate in Binghamton.

And with Claesson heading down to the minors, that means Thomas Chabot will begin the season in the NHL - likely for at least nine games.

Matt Puempel is safe for now, as it looks like he will start the season in the nation’s capital, as well.

Looking around the league, there was no shortage of hustle and bustle as teams were putting together their final roster with time winding down.

Among the names on that long list, Teemu Pulkkinen, P.A. Parenteau and Erik Condra stick out. Pulkinnen has had decent numbers as a youngster and has a very team-friendly cap hit at $812,500 for one year. Parenteau had 41 points with the Islanders last season, only comes in at $1,250,000 for one year and still has a few good years left at age 33. Erik Condra meets the eye simply because he’s Erik Condra.

The Senators could definitely upgrade their team in the next 24 hours if they decide to.
